Meet the guy behind the mic
Here is a bit about the firefighter bringing you the captivating and enjoyable stories from the world of the first responder. Learn about my journey, what my passion is, and why I'm dedicated to sharing these interesting experiences.

Decades of commitment: My journey with the FDNY...
-Picture of myself and my buddy Fred Surber with the old Scott in April of 1979 at multi-unit drill on West St. NYC.
My devotion to duty runs deep. I proudly served as an FDNY firefighter for 43 years, serving 24 of those years as a lieutenant. I followed, as many do, my dad and cousins into the fire service. Tough shoes to fill for sure, but I tried and gave my all every moment. My extensive experience provides me with a perspective of the many risks, the unspoken events, and the honor of being a sheepdog. Assigned to Greenwich Village Eng. 18 in NYC, to Flatbush Brooklyn Lad.157, and eventually being an officer in Da Bronx in Lad.58, I saw multiple communities of various heritages and witnessed first hand how our commitment made a difference. Having responded to almost every conceivable operation from fires to Hazardous Material responses, I learned more than I ever imagined. Surviving 2 building collapses, a flashover, frozen hands and witnessing death on an unparalleled scale, I witnessed the Best in my fellow first responders. I came to see duty, responsibility and love of fellow firefighters, as one the most blessed choices in my life.

Igniting minds: Over two decades of teaching
Beyond the firehouse, my commitment to the fire service extends to education. I've had the privilege of being a per diem instructor at the FDNY Training Academy "The Rock", Speaking at conferences, FDIC, NYSAFC conf., Seminar Series, and Company Officer Leadership Training series, Fire House Expo, Delaware State conf., Passion for Leading conf., NC, Westchester NY Volunteer FF. conf. among others. I have been a New York State fire instructor for 15 years, traveling around NYS teaching Officer class, Modern Fire Behavior, Search and Survival and Eng/Truck classes. I have written articles for Fire Engineering, Size-Up Magazine, Firefighter Nation Magazine, I have also mentioned in the book, The Training Officer and In Their Own Words a book on 9/11. I have been honored to also have been on several podcasts, Getting Salty #85, The Training Officer, FDNY Pro, Profession Firefighter Lecture series, The Daily Mail (Experts by the Decade), Senior Man Series with Leadership Under Fire, and The John Rondi Show. These experiences have allowed me to share critical knowledge, best practices, and the lessons learned from decades of service with aspiring and experienced first responders alike.

More than just a podcast: My passions
While the "Keep Back 200ft" podcast is a significant part of my life, my passions extend beyond sharing stories of firefighting. I am deeply passionate about teaching others, the art and science of firefighting, the unwavering support of family and friends, and the rich history of the fire service. These elements collectively shape who I am and inform the perspectives I bring to every episode, aiming to connect with viewers of all ages and backgrounds.
"My hope is that you hear what we have to say and gain a newfound excitement for the fire service, a deeper appreciation for first responders, and a clearer understanding of the unique world we live in."
